SEO, GEO and AIO: prepare your website for AI search
For visibility in search and AI answers, I start with content that answers a real question, identifies its author and can be accessed technically. SEO, GEO and AIO describe different visibility goals, but none of these labels guarantees rankings or citations.
What do SEO, GEO and AIO mean?
SEO helps search engines discover and understand content. Here, GEO refers to optimisation for generative answers rather than geographic targeting. I use AIO as a broader term for preparing content for AI systems; terminology is not consistent across every tool and author.
Google states that existing SEO fundamentals apply to its AI features and that special AI schema is not required. This is guidance for Google Search, not proof that every AI product behaves alike. I would therefore avoid selling a particular plugin as a guaranteed route to recommendations in every AI answer.
Give each page one concrete question to answer
Instead of repeating a service keyword, start with the answer: what you solve, for whom and under which conditions. Then add a process, example, limitations and next step. If the example includes a calculation, explain its assumptions. Readers should understand the conclusion without guessing where a number came from.
My practical test is simple: would a paragraph still make sense if someone extracted it? Keep the term, its definition and the important condition within the same section. This makes the answer easier to understand on its own. It does not guarantee that an AI system will select that paragraph or recommend its author.
Connect the author, services and sources
Link the author's name to a page explaining their experience and areas of work. Internal links should lead to a useful continuation: a measurement guide, analysis or relevant service. Descriptive link text tells readers what they will find. Linking every keyword indiscriminately makes a page harder to read.
Use official documentation for claims about tools and check it when updating the article. Distinguish a sourced fact from your own method and an illustrative example. An invented testimonial or unexplained number does not become reliable because it appears in structured data.
Check HTML, languages and structured data
Check that the URL serves the expected page, content is not accidentally blocked from indexing and the canonical points to the correct address. Use separate URLs and reciprocal hreflang links for Serbian, English and Hungarian versions. Translate the example, title and description as well as the navigation. Each version should be useful independently.
BlogPosting and BreadcrumbList can describe the article and its position on the site. The title, author and dates in the data should match what visitors see. A sitemap helps discovery. None of these elements independently ensures indexing, a rich result or inclusion in a generative answer.
Track useful outcomes and keep the answer current
Use Search Console to review indexing, queries and pages, then connect those observations with relevant visits and business enquiries. A manual AI answer check records one moment, language and question. It should not be presented as a stable position for every user.
When updating, I first check whether the article still solves the question and whether its sources remain valid. Add a missing explanation or a better example when there is a reason. Changing only the date gives readers no new value. Assess visibility alongside the business relevance of the visit, rather than counting mentions alone.
Checklist
- A direct answer with clear limitations.
- An identifiable author and verifiable sources.
- Useful internal links and complete translations.
- Checked canonical, hreflang, sitemap and BlogPosting data.
Does schema guarantee that AI will cite my website?
No. Structured data describes content but does not oblige a search engine or AI system to display it. First provide a useful, accessible and verifiable answer, then ensure the markup accurately represents it.
Official documentation
Would you like your system reviewed?
Send your website address and a short description of the problem. We will agree the scope of a campaign, analytics or sales journey review.
